Join us for a weekend of poetry, January 31-Feb. 1, 2014, as we celebrate the 20th anniversary of It's Your Mug!

From February 1, 1994 to August 20th, 1996, the It's Your Mug Tuesday night poetry reading, hosted by Toni Asante Lightfoot, had a lasting impact on DC’s poetry scene. So many prize-winning books, plays, reading series, recordings and writing careers can trace their beginnings back to that humble little café. This month we celebrate the writers and artists of that "golden era" of spoken word with a series of readings, panels and gatherings.

These events all are free and open to the public. The money raised through this campaign will go towards offsetting travel costs ($320 for 4 artists), accommodations ($400), marketing and printing costs ($150) and featured artist fees ($50 per artist). Plus, if you give $20 or more, you'll receive a commemorative chapbook!

Friday, January 31: Kennedy Center Millennium Stage, 6-7pm. Featuring Toni Blackman, Toni Asante Lightfoot, Holly Bass, DJ Renegade (Joel Dias-Porter), Brandon D. Johnson and Twain Dooley. With music by B.T. Richardson and Daruba Kenyatte.

Friday January 31: Poetry Afterparty, 8-10pm. Jin Lounge (a.k.a. Mango’s), 2017 14th St. NW. Drink specials and 90s soul sounds. Let's reminisce!

Saturday, Feb. 1: Busboys & Poets, 14th & V, 8-10pm. Come celebrate Langston Hughes' birthday with a panel discussion and open mic. Moderated by Kim Roberts, the panel features Kenny Carroll, Raquel Brown, Toni Asante Lightfoot talking about the history of DC spoken word scene.
