This is the beginning of Rachel's Journey-Kickin' Cancers Butt! Now it's our turn as a community and support team to help Rachel and her family out. She has done so much behind the scenes to help her community. She is one amazing woman, mother, friend, teacher and hockey manager,. here is her story.
This summer: I kept saying to Evan something didn't feel right..by breasts were tender and felt like a pinching sensation off and on. His response "Go to the Doctor!!" October: I decided it was time that I get my first mammo ever. I was always too scared to get one cuz I thought it would hurt (imagine squishing it down like a pancake when you don't have much to squish in the first place!) ouch right? nope it doesn't even hurt really. Anyway, after 2 mammos, a nuclear medicine scan, a double biopsy, and an MRI I was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma (Breast CANCER) on Dec. 4, 2013...a day I will never forget. Not sure what stage it is... we think stage 1 possible 2 if it is in my ducts. So it is early. I have 3 tumors on the right side and none on the left but will be removing both breasts...I am OCD and like things to match. lol We have been WAITING and WAITING for test results all along the way. The last one was my reoccurrence score with tells us how likely it will come back and how it reacts to the chemo..I got an 18 which is right on the bubble of being a medium score 18=low, 19=med. So, that means I don't need to do chemo or not prior to surgery anyway. I am WAITING now for my surgeon and my plastic surgeon to schedule a date that is "convenient" for them to do a double mastectomy and start the reconstruction with tissue expanders. I won't get the implants until my skin stretches far enough...No I am not getting a double DD -- just one size up from my normal. Heck of a way to get a boobie job I know! Looks like it might be Jan. 16 but I am going to call on Monday and see if we can get it sooner. Once they get into surgery they will see if it has spread to my lymph nodes. If it has they will remove those and then I will do chemo later on. So, basically that is it in a nutshell so far. Stay tuned on here if you want to follow my journey. I will rant and post often or as needed. I feel at peace with the whole thing really...thanks to having the support I have from my family, friends, co-workers and even strangers who have written to me or stopped me on the street. Such a blessing!!
