R Moore hasn't added a story.
Survivors of MIlitary Sexual Trauma have their lives destroyed in rape, and neither the military or society is willing to help them. They are often legally prosecuted for being victims of a terrible crime and have no recourse for their lives when they are out-processed. The Veterans Administration denied them access to healthcare benefits, and they often become homeless or try to kill themselves - because even their own families turn their backs to avoid the embarassment they feel with rape stigmatization.
Ruth Moore is a survivor who has testified in Congress and rebuilt her life slowly and painfully over 27 years since her rapes. Her experience of being homeless, victimized by society, and denied critical healthcare for over half of her life is NOT uncommon. She was the driving force behind the narrowly defeated RUTH MOORE ACT of 2013 which would have given veterans the help they desperately need from the Veterans Administration. It was defeated in the Senate because the politicians feel that giving help to veterans would "cost too much money." As one V.B.A. person said - "if they wait long enough, we will die."
Whenever she speaks or interacts with veterans, the predominant idea that comes forth is that MST survivors need a safe place to decompress, get their bearings, meet with a life coach, and help them develop a plan for their lives so that they don't fall through the cracks, become homeless, or commit suicide. They never get over the rape, but they can learn to see life in a positive light and become productive citizens if they get this type of help quickly.
The Ruth Moore Foundation is a grass roots organization that can become a viable non-profit to provide this desperately needed support. Our goal is to purchase a remote piece of property that allows veterans to decompress in nature, explore their anger safely, find ways to heal, develop a plan for their lives with a career coach, attend resource classes to learn about the often "hidden" help that is availaible for MST survivors, and learn to have FUN again rather than live in constant fear and mistrust.
We need your help to buy a perfect 50 acre location in Maine. It is perfectly situated and would allow us to provide upwards of 48 retreats per year, develop the rescource center, and give hope back to many of our military men and women who have given so much to us. We have therapeutic activities, classes, and self help programs ready to start - we just need a home to do this.
Please give generously, as we know that there are over 26,000 men and women who are raped annually in the military and there is NO help for them once they take the uniform off. Our survivor population is over 1,000,000 people using the data from the Service Womens Action Network. PLEASE HELP!
