Dear Friends,

What will become of the Opera House Theater on historic Washington Square in Newport, RI, if it is not restored? Will the nearly 150 year-old theater be torn down and replaced by a mini-mall? A parking garage? A big box store?

We can not assume, just because there are plans to restore it to its former glory, that the building is safe from such a sad fate.

A decade ago the front of the theater was wonderfully brought back to its handsome brick facade (begone bad Flinstone's-style '70s faux boulders!), but now the rest of the building needs to be just as lovingly restored.

The building, which is one of the fifteen oldest theaters in the United States, derserves to be saved, just as so many other threatened buildings have been heroically preserved in Newport's more recent past.

Built in 1867, the Opera House Theater is ripe for a fabulous restoration, but we need your support to continue moving forward. The theater is an architectural treasure which has thus far been sheperded by a small hands-on group of volunteers committed to realizing the vision of an old but new, exciting, educational, entertaining, and ecomomically viable incarnation of the Opera House Theater as a performing arts center.

When restored and re-opened, the theater will offer live music, theater, dance, culture, comedy, educational programs, and community events. It will also create jobs and economic growth for local businesses and the city.

Please consider making a 2013 Annual Fund contribution to the Opera House Theater by or before December 31, 2013. We do only one fundraiser year and this is it.

Every little bit helps and is greatly appreciated! Thank you!!!
