Johnny grew up in Goleta, Ca. as a typical surfing, skating, punk kid. At the age of 16 his life took a very dramatic turn when he developed Bacterial Meningitis, an illness that until that time had always been a death sentence. Miraculously, John survived, but the disease had left him a quadruple amputee. Even as doctors assured him that he would never surf or play guitar again, Johnny was determined to find a way to continue doing just that. After he had healed enough to have his bandages removed he picked up his friends old guitar and figured out how to play with his hand stumps. Johnny went on to become a founding member of San Francisco’s best punk band of 2002, the Angry Amputees. After touring the world with his band Johnny settled down in Alameda. He became a high school digital filmmaking teacher, inspiring many young people to follow their dreams of becoming filmmakers. In 2010 he discovered Ampsurf and his passion for surfing was reignited. Finally, he was able to get back out on the waves, which was something he wasn’t sure he’d ever be able to do again. He was all set to head to the beach again this summer only to find out that this year Ampsurf has changed their policy to only allowing Vets in their program. This has made getting out to the waves significantly more difficult him. Ampsurf provided instruction, gear and a beach wheelchair. With that support no longer available surfing has, sadly, felt out of reach for him. Hopefully, with the help of his friends and loved ones, Johnny can continue to develop his passion for surfing without having to worry how he’ll get down to the ocean. Together, we can help get Johnny D an all-terrain wheelchair so he can plow through the sand at his favorite surf spots with (relative) ease.
