Since its inception, optometry has encountered opposition from ophthalmologists in the political arena. The fight for the rights of optometrists to prescribe and treat ocular disease has had a familiar history in each of the 50 states and territories. It is a sad fact that Doctors of Optometry in Puerto Rico have not been able to overcome opposition from ophthalmology and successfully pass a law that would allow us to legally prescribe topical drugs to our patients. As a result, the population of Puerto Rico is at great risk of complications and vision loss. There are currently 3.92 million people living in Puerto Rico and only 138 ophthalmologists actively serving. The average wait time to visit with an ophthalmologist is 3 months and office wait time is over 3 hours.

Ophthalmologists in Puerto Rico have claimed that optometrists are inadequately prepared to prescribe topical therapeutic drops. In addition, they claim that allowing ODs to prescribe would force patients in to "a life and death situation". The truth is that optometrists in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico receive the same education and successfully complete the same National Board exams that are required in the continental United States. The citizens of Puerto Rico need your help. Your donation will ultimately help provide patients with access to the visual and ocular health care they so desperately need and deserve. Let us fight blindness, glaucoma and ocular infections together. Your donation will make visual healthcare 6 times more accessible in Puerto Rico and help raise the current state of visual health of our patients.

FACT: The Interamerican University of Puerto Rico School of Optometry has been creating excellent doctors with the knowledge and skills to practice full scope optometry including treatment of infectious disease, glaucoma, keratoconus, foreign bodies, uveitis, and more.

FACT: The public health system needs optometry to meet the visual needs of 3.92 million people.

FACT: Diabetics need a dilated eye exam every year and this health standard is not currently being met.

FACT: There are only 5 pediatric ophthalmologists currently practicing in Puerto Rico. Our children need optometry to meet their visual needs and to enhance their quality of life.

FACT: The best treatment for disease is prevention. Allowing optometrists full scope privileges including topical pharmaceuticals will result in healthier eyes for everyone.
