On Saturday July 28, 2012 I went into work on my day off so that I would be able to get ahead on the work that needed to be done. Upon leaving work and arriving at the first intersection I was struck on my motorcycle by a 95 year old man who was making a left turn against the traffic light. I suffered a major crushing injury to my left leg, which had to be amputated in the hospital, as there was not enough viable tissue to save it. The gentleman carried minimum insurance for the state of Ohio and had nothing else. I am now 24 years old and will be an amputee for the remainder of my life and will have all of the added expenses of prosthetic devices as well as the bills from the hospital stay of 10 days. Shortly after getting out of the hospital my wife and I were blessed to find out that we had conceived our first child and she was born this past April. Before my accident I was a very active individual; playing hockey, soccer, and football, and would always ride my motorcycle at every chance for nice weather. I always wore the appropriate safety gear (helmet, boots, gloves, jacket, long pants) but on this day it would not be enough to save my leg from being amputated above the knee. The hardest part of this will be trying to be the best father I can be to my daughter and giving up many of the joys in my life that came from the activities I participated in.
