Meet my friend Bekah. A few years ago, Bekah was diagnosed with Breast Cancer at 28 years old. She had felt a lump one year earlier but was told it was probably “nothing to worry about” only to discover that it actually was. Her ordeal was faced head on with a team of support all around her, as everyone loves Bekah. On her 29th birthday she celebrated with a bald head. Following chemotherapy she was able to get genetic testing, which revealed that she carried the BRCA2 gene mutation. Doctors advised her to have a double mastectomy due to her BRCA2 status and the aggressiveness of her tumor. So, on June 18th, 2009 she went to sleep with 2 breasts & a tumor, and woke up with neither. As of that date her oncologist says she can consider herself to be in Remission. Following the surgeries, she completed over a month of radiation. But this wasn’t the end! She has had three more surgeries for breast reconstruction and countless other tests, procedures & minor surgeries related to the cancer. The bills stacked up, as you might imagine. I learned this summer that she currently owes about thirty different medical providers; and to some providers she owes more than one bill. Several bills have gone to collections and she receives a phone call nearly every day from one of the thirty providers. With all the physical & emotional ordeal behind her, to have this on top of it seemed to me an injustice. Bekah is currently paying each provider $5 a month; at this rate she will be in debt for years. Considering the billions of dollars that are being raised for Breast Cancer with almost all of it going strictly to Research & Awareness, I asked myself why none of it was available for Bekah? It became clear that something needed to be done. I wanted to highlight Bekah’s story and see if some of the “pink” money might fall toward her. If you are normally inclined to give toward breast cancer this time of year I ask you to consider sending your donation toward Bekah. There are several ways you could do this: • Corporate sponsorship (be creative; if you’re looking for ideas let me know! We already have three very different sponsorships in place, and need more.) • Get pledges for the Crush Bills 4 Bekah 5k Run (even $5 per kilometer would take care of one provider for five months!!) • Donate thru PayPal to crush some of her bills online! All of the dollars raised will go directly to her medical bills as I will be paying them off one by one as the funds come in. Bekah currently owes a total of $9,800. I know that Bekah’s bills are not enormous and that eventually they will get paid… But, I have to be honest and say that the idea came from God. I feel lucky that I get to participate and watch to see what He wanted as the final outcome. Maybe there are more Bekah’s in the world, and maybe the scales can begin to tip….toward those who need it the most. Thank you for your consideration & support.
