Maria Grace Lewis (nee Metcalf) died of breast cancer in March 2015. She didn't want her life to be defined by the disease, so I started a fellowship at the Univ. of Tennessee in her name. The paperwork is finished but I need help to secure her legacy.

My name is James Lewis, and I am heading up this fundraising effort to solidify a fellowship at the University of Tennessee in honor of my wife, Maria G. Lewis (nee Metcalf), who passed away on March 9, 2015, from breast cancer. Maria spent her life helping others, from the time she was in Key Club in high school through her career in public health working with HIV positive adolescents.

The fellowship has been created, but for it to last, it requires a $25,000 endowment, and that is where this campaign comes in. Beyond the site’s standard processing fee, every penny that is donated will go to the university, and more specifically, to the endowment for Maria’s fellowship. If you can help with a donation, it would be incredibly appreciated. If you can’t, but you are able to share this with others, that would be equally valued.

One question you might have is why a fellowship and not something more standard, like a donation to Susan G. Komen, or another equally worthy charity. There are a few reasons, but the biggest is Maria herself. She refused to let her life be defined by breast cancer, and I think it is appropriate that the tribute to her not be defined by it either.

I hope that you will consider joining me in helping to create a legacy in honor of a woman who never asked for anything herself, but was always willing to give everything she had.
