Help Dolphins Remain Wild and Free
My name is Helene O´Barry. I have spent twenty years fighting against the capture, confinement, and commercial exploitation of dolphins.
Dolphins are highly social and intelligent creatures who should be free to roam the oceans of the world with their families. Dolphins suffer in captivity.
In campaigning against dolphin captivity, I have seen firsthand the hope children hold for dolphins. Children are smart and have an innate empathy for other living beings. Most of all, they understand better than adults how critical it is to be with family. Once children realize how many of the captive dolphins have been taken from their families to be confined to small, barren tanks, never to see their mothers, fathers, or siblings again, they understand how wrong it is to imprison these wonderful beings.
I have campaigned against dolphin captivity in Europe, Asia, the Caribbean, Mexico, Canada, Central America, South America, and the United States. Together with my husband, Ric O´Barry, I have helped rescue, rehabilitate and release dolphins back into the wild in Colombia, Nicaragua, Guatemala and Haiti.
I have also witnessed dolphin shows in dolphinariums around the world. What is saddest about these shows is what children are shown by watching dolphins perform. Dolphinariums teach children that dolphins thrive in captivity and perform because they like it. This creates both current and future consumer demand for dolphins, resulting in greater numbers of dolphins being trapped in tiny tanks for our entertainment.
Ending the capture and confinement of dolphins requires educating the next generation. Taking a step in this direction, I have written a children’s book about a dolphin who is taken from his ocean home and forced to live in captivity. He dreams of escape but is unsuccessful in his attempts until one day he finds a human who understands how much the dolphin misses his freedom and his family. This fictionalized version of a true story engages the reader through action, conflict, and hope that the dolphin will be able to escape to return to his lost ocean home.
My book´s message is one that children will appreciate: All captive dolphins, whether captured in the wild or born in captivity, feel a strong connection to the ocean. They all wish that they could swim far, dive deep, and surf the great ocean waves. Children who read this book will see this and come to realize that they can help save dolphins from capture and confinement by never buying a ticket to watch them perform silly tricks in dolphinariums.
You, too, can help save dolphins by making a contribution to support the publishing and distribution of a book that will change the hearts and minds of future leaders and citizen activists. The raised funds will cover the expenses for illustrations, production, distribution, and marketing of the book. Through your contribution, you will join the vital effort to put an end to the demand for captive dolphins.
- The book´s working title is Squee´s Great Escape.
- Its length is estimated to be 35 pages.
- It targets children aged 6-9.
- Each page will be illustrated by Cheryl de los Reyes Cruz, who is a highly talented children´s book illustrator.
- The book will be marketed in book stores, on Amazon, and on various dolphin activist websites.
- It will have its own Facebook page.
- If funds allow, the book will also be featured as an educational coloring book for children.
Thank you in advance for helping to save the dolphins!
