The PEI committee of the Guatemala Maritimes Breaking the Silence Network  (BTS-PEI) is pleased to sponsor Eliza MacLauchlan while she works as a international human rights accompanier in Guatemala.  Eliza is a University of Prince Edward Island graduate that has been working for the past 6 months with BTS, a Guatemalan-Maritimes solidarity network based in Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia.

Breaking the Silence had originally started sending international accompaniers to Guatemala during the return process of refugees before the signing of the peace accords in 1996. This signing came upon the termination of a 36-year civil war that took the lives of at least 200,000 people. Today, Breaking the Silence accompaniers participate in a network with 10 countries that provide accompaniment to a number of national human rights organizations working against impunity, and for truth and justice, the defense of territory and natural recourses, and labour and union rights.

International human right accompaniment in Guatemala act as observers, documenting any intimidations, threats or acts of violence against those being accompanied, and disseminate this information internationally to bring awareness to the risks that are being taken by those individuals that speak out against injustices that are presently happening, 18 years after the peace accords were originally signed.

After volunteering for 6 months in this position, Eliza has seen the incredible importance of international accompaniment work for the human right defenders in Guatemala. For this reason, she has decided to continue until May of 2015 in Guatemala working as an international human rights accompanier. With this extended time, she is asking for financial support in order to continue this important work. Thank you in advance for your support.
