About The Small World
The Small World is a 501 (C) 3 non-profit charitable organization supporting locally driven sustainable community development projects in Nepal. These projects help to provide education for children, especially young girls at risk for exploitation, women’s empowerment, and opportunities for local communities to break the cycle of poverty.
The Challenges Facing Nepal
Nepal is renowned for its natural beauty, spectacular scenery and cultural landmarks. With Mount Everest on the northern border, and the birthplace of Buddha to the south, Nepal is undoubtedly a charming and exotic destination. However, many people are unaware that Nepal is also the poorest country in Asia with a high percentage of the population living in abject poverty.
Almost half of Nepal’s young female population is married before they are 18 years old, and it is estimated that every year, from 15,000 - 20,000 Nepalese girls (42% of which are minors) are trafficked into the international sex slavery industry.
Nepal has the lowest literacy rate in Asia and one of the highest child mortality rates in the world. Infrastructure is not only highly inadequate, but also nonexistent in remote mountain villages where people live an ancient lifestyle without benefit of roads, electricity, telephones, sanitation, running water, hospitals, or schools.
Arhaus’ Relationship with The Small World
Arhaus began partnering with The Small World in 2012 to help support their efforts and reduce the risks to these young women.
Arhaus’ fundraising has helped to build and maintain an orphanage for 40 girls ages 4 – 18. This home provides these girls with a safe place to live where they are supported with meals, medical care and education. Taking them off of the streets eliminates the risks of trafficking, forced child labor, and abuse. Arhaus also helped raise funds to provide relief and rebuilding work after the Nepal earthquake in 2015 including food, drinking water and temporary school for children’s education.
Our current mission is to help The Small World build a second orphanage in Solukhumbu that will house 100 boys and girls that were displaced from their homes when the 2015 earthquake devastated the area. 9,000 people were killed, 288,000 homes were destroyed, and 188,900 people were internally displaced. Solukhumbu was hit hard, since it was one of the closest districts to the epicenter. Nepal’s Central Government, due to economic reasons, did not declare Solukhumbu as an emergency district. Because of that, recovery has been slow and is still ongoing, although today a high coordination between local government and development organizations has developed.
Proposed Action Building plan:
- 20 dormitory rooms for children accommodation to benefit up to 100 children
- 5 Rooms for teachers quarters
- 3 Room for staffs
- Kitchen & Dining rooms
- 2 rooms for offices and meeting with guests
- Toilets and shower separately for girls and boys and teachers
- 24 hour running drinking water installation
- Library and computer room
- Accommodations for sports including volleyball, football, basketball, badminton, table tennis, etc..
- Auditorium capacity of up to 150 children for combined activities as well as large events on a regular basis
For the self-sufficiency and sustainability, they have enough land to grow their own vegetables and other foods as a part of teaching agricultural skills to students.
