Equal Chances Foundation hasn't added a story.

English (Magyar alatta):

Our names are Márk, Sarah, and Charlene. We're interns at the Equal Chances Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides housing and employment for physically and mentally disabled people in Hungary.

Today, the organization employs 300 disabled people in the town of Csömör and almost 300 in various branches across Hungary. Work ranges from ceramics to organic farming to industrial crafts. The foundation also provides housing and institutional care for over 100 people at the Csömör location.

We’ve experienced how the patients here develop an infectious sense of integrity and purpose they haven't found anywhere else, and that's why we want to share this story with you.

It all started with Erzsébet, the founder

The doctors told Erzsébet Szekeres that her disabled son, Tibor, would only live to be 5 years old. When he turned 6, she realized he would reach adulthood one day. However, there were no opportunities for people like Tibor to live a normal adult life in Hungary. In 1986, Erzsébet started the Equal Chances Foundation, building a countrywide network aiming to help the disabled.

“This is a joint project with my son. I would have never thought of creating something like this if he weren't born,” Erzsébet says.

Tibor is now 38 years old, and the foundation has grown tremendously. People find a home here when other places have given up on them. Unfortunately, the organization is currently facing its worst financial crisis.

Why do we need your help?

The national government recently passed a law that affected programs for the disabled. In order for an organization to receive individualized funding, each of its patients must take a medical examination. However, because of an overload of patients across the country, many have not received their examinations. As a result, most organizations including ours, are severely lacking in funds to maintain their services. Other organizations have responded by laying off their most severely disabled patients to make up for their financial deficit.

The Equal Chances Foundation’s philosophy is to give everyone a chance. Laying off any patient would be going directly against the organization’s mission. Equal Chances has to find a different solution. And that's where you can step in!

If the foundation does not raise $83,269 by September 1, 2014:

  • 586 disabled Hungarians will lose their employment

  • 111 Hungarians will lose their homes

  • These changes will happen overnight since all of the organization’s utilities will be cut

We are asking you for support

Equal Chances is actively looking for funding from various sources. More funds are coming from the government in October, so we just need to hang on until then! Through this campaign, we hope to raise $20,000.

Support over 600 people with severe mental and physical disabilities who have no other place to turn to. Everyone deserves a chance. Please consider donating to help keep this unique organization alive!

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts,

Márk, Sarah, and Charlene

Magyarul:

Miért fontos a segítséged?

  • 589 sérült magyar ember elveszíti a munkájá

Ezért ezzel a kampánnyal 20,000$ (4.577.900 forint) összegyűjtése a célunk.
