Richard & Ambar Gutierrez hasn't added a story.
Our Family:
We live in the big state, Texas. We (Richard & Ambar) first lived in El Paso, West Texas where there are dust storms and tumble weeds roll across the desert land with no direction but just where the wind takes them. This is where we grew up, graduated from college, and married. I (Ambar) gradated from the University of El Paso Texas (UTEP), Go Miners! I graduated with a Bachelors of Social Work. I love my career and all the things I am able to do to help others. Richard also went to UTEP for some time until we moved to Austin, Live Music Capital of the World. Don’t get the wrong impression; we are not musicians at all. We moved to Austin because of job opportunities. We enjoyed the big city life for some time; we enjoyed the views of Texas’ rolling hills, and we enjoyed the occasional appearance of deer in the distance. Unless we really looked for deer, which we often did, we would see many of them roaming the neighborhoods. Yes, the neighborhoods. As for me, I had to have deer-corn handy. Believe or not, I do have a favorite highway in Austin, N. Capital of Texas Hwy, AKA 360; a bridge crossing the Colorado River, hills and lots of trees verily making visible the roof tops . In the spring, wild flowers in blue, red, yellow and orange decorate the road verge. Here Richard continued pursuing his Engineering degree, until we moved to Denton. He is now attending University of North Texas class of 2016. Go Mean Green! We sure have lots of fun when both our colleges play football. So far I continue being the underdog but I hope not for long. Here we find calmness in the small city life and countryside; we do fear the cold weather, out of nowhere ice storms, and tornados. What used to be a tedious task as it’s moving; now it’s an adventure. There’s still much more to explore in Texas. We enjoy most learning about other cultures, visiting places we haven’t been to before, especially when it comes down to nature like national parks, fishing, camping, hiking, traveling, and almost anything involving travel.
Why adoption?
Believing in Psalm 68:6 “God sets the lonely in families”, we are overjoyed to announce we are adopting from China. I know this will be a huge surprise to some of you, but it‘s certainly not surprising to us! We always wanted have our biological children and children not physically born from us. We just didn’t know when or how. We believe that God called us to adopt to care for and love a child as our own. We’d like to share with you how God led us to this decision and how through difficult experiences in our family planning He equipped us to this task. We met Rafael 8 and Michelle 6 in 2008. Their mom was terminally ill. As they painfully lost their mom in a battle to cancer, we cared for them and loved them. Sorting through relationships and family ties it was imminent we would not see them again. This happened for reasons beyond our understanding and control. The emptiness caused by this experience is inexplicable in a few words. We were emotionally drained and baffled at how easy it was to love and invest in child who was not physically ours. We loved them for being cute and for being children, but we mostly loved them for their strength to endure the loss of their mom. We were there to hug them when they felt lonely, sad or discouraged, and we praised them for their accomplishments. We love Rafael and Michelle and miss them dearly. Our hope is to see them again someday.
Two years later I had a miscarriage. It was one of the hardest things we endured in our marriage. Of course we cried and many long days we were sad because we could not see beyond our loss. We had many options, as you might already know there’re many resources and medical treatments to have biological children. We decided we would not invest in ourselves or spend time in a doctor’s office figuring out how we can have biological children. Although, that is a blessing to many families, it's not for us. Our time and resources could better be put to use giving an orphan a family, a place to can call their own, and a mom and dad. We were then called to adopt.
Our adoption will cost approximately $35,000 (less $3,000 we have contributed, and $1,538.85 raised through generous donations/fundraising). I know that sounds like a lot, and it is. We really felt adopting would be impossible because of the cost. Yet, children who have lost everything and are living in an orphanage desperately need a loving family. How can anyone deny that? Although, we would like to raise these funds through our own hard work, we recognize that it would be a long time before we could bring our child home. We believe God is bigger than finances, He will provide resources among family, friends and believers. We cannot accomplish this without your support.
As we reach our adoption financial goal, we aspire to also bring awareness about orphan care/need, inspire others to get involved sponsoring or begining an adoption journey.
