How many times have we heard the saying 'the shoemaker's children run barefoot', or something similar.. Well, as embarrassing as it is, I am 1 month post-op from a back surgery and can't go back to work any time soon. To add insult to injury, a few days after the surgery I was readitted to the hospital with shortness of breath, chest pain and concern of a blood clot. And, to top it all off with a stich absess in my back, and I can't really bend or move without it putting pressure on it. Fun!!! I had been putting off the surgery for nearly 9 months because as a physical therapist, I thought I could just 'tough it out' and get better. Well, when I came home from a road trip in early January and could barely move, I realized I wasn't getting better.

Here's the problem: I'm a physical therapist and due to the nature of my job, I really can't go back to work at the level I need to be at for another 6-8 weeks (having been out of work off and on 9 months since the initial injury).  I have spent the last 5 years of my career helping others recover from injury, stroke, brain injury, etc., and for the first time, I really can't help others, or help myself financially. I have a pile of medical bills piling up after the last month (along with just the 'normal ones') and I am really limited in what I can do to support myself. Most people who know me know that on an average day I would work 2-3 jobs just to get things done, but due to the nature of my surgery, I simply can't.

I started my own private practice Water's Edge Physical Therapy and Wellness this past year so that as I recover, I can slowly grow, build my client basis, and move away from needing to see 20 patients a day.  That way I can limit the lifting, transfers and general grunt-work that I used to do so that I can physically maintain my career.  I want to continue to help people in my field, but looking forwards, I want to do it in a different way. I want to be able to spend 1 hour or more with  my patients, give them customized care using technoligical advances, and 1-on-1 attention. My therapy practice emphasizes the importance of the surfing and ocean-sports community here in North County San Diego.  That said, since this Fundrazr campaign has kicked off, I have been inspired to begin a non-profit organization that allows the coastal community of north county San Diego have access to these therapy services, and put people B ack to Surf.

I am asking for help for my medical bills and limited finances while I am recovering from my own surgery, as well as donations to help my new physical therapy practice and adjunct non-profit grow.  Any help at this time would be greatly appreciated... Thanks..
