Yale University will be hosting its annual American Literature in the World Conference.  They have decided to allow me and Daniel Valella, my co-author, to come out to the conference and present our paper on Las Aventuras de Don Chipote o Cuando los Pericos Mamen, a 1920s picaresque novel about the plight of a Mexican immigrant written by a Tapatio who migrated here in the late 1800s.

So what!? You say.

Well, this novel is seen by some to be a celebration of the immigrant spirit, eventhough there are blatant signs that the author was objectifying the immigrant character he used for seemingly political reasons.  Given the topicality of the subject matter, this is a great time to dive into a discourse about what immigrant novels do, how the migrant should be viewed and treated, both in art and in life.

I am excited to explore this topic before an academic audience at Yale, hopefully starting conversations that may have implications down the road for the millions of immigrants that are struggling to change outdated perspectives.

Only problem is that I have to find a way to get there. That is where you come in.  I am trying to raise funds for the airfare and accomodations when I get there.  I need your help.  Any contributions are greatly appreciated and will go toward contributing to the deeper conversation about immigration and representations of immigrants in literature and art.
