The University of Alberta's Global Service Learning team is a group of 14 students and staff, heading to Guatemala for 10 days in February to volunteer alongside a community group. Our main project will be constructing clean burning stoves in rural homes. In order to make this happen, we need as much support as we can. Funds donated here will go right to the building supplies, and the assistance of local Guatemalan masons.

With regards to the stoves, women in rural areas spend roughly 7-8 hours per day cooking on open-wood fires in their homes causing problems for safety, pulmonary disease, back injuries, other health risks, and reforestation. By spending so much time cooking, they are often unable to take care of their children, or get involved in other important activities for themselves, which can be linked to issues related to depression. By building stoves, our groups will be helping to change the lives of 8 women, their children, and their communities.
