Ride To Give hasn't added a story.
Christian, a 12 year old young man from Easley, SC, was born facing many life challenges. Shortly after his birth, he started experiencing weakness in his arms and in his trunk, as well as leg spasticity (tightness). After many visits to a neurologist, MRIs and CT scans, Christian was diagnosed with quadriplegic cerebral palsy. This means that Christian will be wheelchair dependent throughout his whole life. He started receiving physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy before he turned one year old. Even during all of this adversity in his tiny life, he maintained a winning attitude and smile. His family learned to cope and adapt to this new type of "normal" that entailed countless doctor and therapy visits.
Up until he was 8 years old, Christian's family thought their lives would continue on this track of "normalcy." Unfortunately, life had other plans. On March 16, 2010 Christian was diagnosed with late stage 4B Hodgkin's Lymphoma. The cancer had spread to innumerable lymph nodes in his neck and ears, lungs, spleen, liver, and bone marrow. He also had a large tumor in his chest that was closing off his esophagus & windpipe, and pressing against his heart. The doctor said the tumor filled his entire chest cavity. Total and utter devastation does not begin to describe the emotions that overtook the family at this time. Still, Christian fought his battle with a winning smile... And he won! He went into remission, but 3 short months after achieving remission his cancer came back in full force, attacking his neck, lungs and bone marrow. This time, there was only one choice for treatment, and in June 2011, Christian had a bone marrow transplant.
Once again, Christian fought his battle with a winning smile. :-) It has taken him a long time to "get better." He will always experience side effects from cancer treatment like life threatening issues due to the transplant such as platelet destruction, but he pulls through each time. He always comes out a winner against really big battles!
Christian has 3 other brothers all with special needs and RTG would like to get them a hitch and wheelchair trailer for their current van, because it is too old to modify. We have set the fundraiser at $2200 to cover hitch installation, wheelchair trailer/lift, and cover.
Please help us make each day for Christian and his family a little bit easier.
