Every child should have the opportunity to go to school. Unfortunately, millions of boys and girls are denied this opportunity simply for lack of facilities and teachers. I am raising funds to rebuild a primary school in a remote village in Malawi, Africa and I need your help!

I have lived in Malawi for one and a half years now. Most of my time I have spent in Mkombe Village, located in the Ntchisi District in the Central Region of the country. Statistically, Ntchisi’s population is one of the most uneducated in Malawi. Most women in my village have not attended school beyond eighth grade, and, without access to proper education, many remain illiterate. Lack of education is one of the biggest obstacles this village faces.

The aim of this project is to rebuild Mtambo Primary School in my village of Mkombe. Before the school was constructed, students (some as young as five years old) had to travel 8 km every day to the nearest school. Mkombe Village was granted permission by the District Office to construct a school with the promise of providing teachers, but the government provided no financial assistance for the construction. Despite this, the village constructed two classrooms and four teacher houses out of bricks, and another two classrooms out of straw. However, in the rainy season last year, I was surprised when young children would gather in my yard during school hours. They explained that classes were cancelled due to flooding. Both of the straw classrooms would flood whenever it rained, which is nearly every day during the rainy season (three months out of the year). This leads teachers to cancel classes and interrupt the education of hundreds of pupils

Additionally, the school is overpopulated and understaffed. There is a total of four classrooms, a total of 505 students and four teachers. The District Office has agreed to provide two more teachers if the village constructs two more classrooms and two teacher houses. In addition, if the school is able to construct those buildings it will be registered in the District Office as an official school, which will make the it eligible for future funding through the District Office.

The children in Mkombe face so many obstacles in getting an education. They are expected to stay at home to help farm and collect the harvest two months out of the year. Another three months is spent at home avoiding the rains. The time they are in school they lack the proper learning materials. Rebuilding this school can be the first step to creating a proper learning environment for these kids and giving them hope for a brighter future.

I am raising funds in order to do the following improvements on the school:

- Construct two classrooms
- Purchase iron sheets for the two classrooms that are currently being constructed. Iron sheets protect the classrooms from heavy rains
- Construct two teacher houses
- Construct an office for storage of supplies and books

All these improvements can be completed with $2,500! Please help create a proper learning environment for these children!
