Have you ever wondered what could be done to stop gunmen from entering a school and killing innocent people? What if I told you I have a device that cannot stop them, but will deter gun violence in public places. What if that same device would ... More ...
How do you feel after watching the news to only find out there has been a shooting at a school? Whether it occurs at a college, high school, or elementary, it is difficult to comprehend; especially for those of us who are attending or have a loved one who attends. Education literally makes the world go round and helps individuals develop into why should we be afraid to go? I am not saying that WE can stop gun violence at public places, but I guarantee that we can minimize the damage done and deter gunmen.

Amid America’s raging gun debate, one startup has developed an idea that could step across the political divide and save lives.

The Start Garden community endorsed CHIEF to recieve a $5,000 initial investment from the $15 million seed fund last week. CHIEF is an idea for a device that would detect the noise of indoor gunfire. The acoustic surveillance system could be used alert a building's residents and local authorities, hopefully saving lives when a gunman is either in a building or on the loose.

“The technology is already there to detect gunfire, but the current systems cannot detect the gunshots indoors, which is where our system will excel,” writes idea creator Joseph Stein on his Start Garden page. “Currently, the amount of buildings in the world is unknown. However, there are more than 136,270 schools in America to start with. CHIEF can be installed in a variety of buildings, such as movie theaters. In the long run, we hope to develop other devices as well.”

C.H.I.E.F started out as an indoor gunfire detection system, that is shaping into an all around emergency device with features such as Bypass that is similar to GM's Onstar feature. C.H.I.E.F is one of two systems capable of such a task as indoor sound ranging, but it stand far out from the competition. The catch, it is more affordable than the other system with more features that can be tailored to each school, mall or movie theater. To make it even more affordable we are going to subsidize the device for schools. But innovative and affordable cost money...

C.H.I.E.F is in the first phase of development. Baby stage as some say. But with your help we would invest in more mathematicians to help construct the final algorithms such as the Fourier Transform. We also need a better FPGA to handle these complicated algorithms and Digital Signal Processing: we are using a Raspberry Pi currently which costs about $35. The FPGA we need is created by AcroMag and costs about $3500. We have a great team of IT guys which does not help our marketing sector. Needless to say we want to bring on a marketing firm here in GR. We also have intellectual property that we cannot disclose currently since we do not have money for patents. Which brings our second major issue, getting around patents.

As I said, we have a great IT team and I have some tricks up my sleeve to overcome these obstacles. Currently I am a science and technology student at Grand Valley State University.I also am a licensed producer in Illinois and Michigan, so marketing and sales in not new to me. We just need a little financial backing. Who is with me on saving lives and fighting the bad guys back?
