Hope is truly a miracle. She was brought in on Monday with the biggest abdominal hernia I have every seen. Just by feeling it I could tell that her intestines and her spleen were located in the hernia. Hope had a cough, has horrible teeth and was underweight. She also had hookworms on her fecal and has entropion on her upper eyelids. We decided to treat her for possible kennel cough with antibiotics and deworm her and get her in for surgery the next week. Doris had to take Hope to CVS because she was straining to defecate and the doctor there advised her to have the surgery done as soon as possible. She was given 50% chance of making it through surgery. A radiograph was taken at CVS and showed her intestines and spleen in the hernia. It also showed possible bulla’s in her lungs. Especially with this finding her anesthesia became higher risk.
Doris dropped Hope of yesterday and we submitted bloodwork to get her ready for surgery this morning. Hope bloodwork showed anemia and a horrible infection with a white blood cell count of 28,000! We prepared her for surgery and I removed small intestines, large intestines and spleen as well as her uterus from the hernia on the right side of her abdomen. I spayed her, repaired the hernia and closed her abdomen up. During her recovery she started producing purulent discharge from her lungs. A large amount of pus started pouring out of her tracheal tube and she started to wheeze. I suctioned her tube and lavaged her for 45 minutes. During this time she was doing poorly and I called Doris to get authorization to euthanize her if she started to suffer. Hope shocked us all and woke up breathing easier than before. She is now sitting up in her cage and we have started her on broad spectrum antibiotics and she is holding her own. She is a miracle up to this point but she really needs to go to a 24 hour facility to manage her infection to give her any Hope of survival. Please help hope
