Kellie Kanaar turns 40 in May. As we all know, that’s a milestone year and Kellie deserves a good celebration.

Kellie is the kind of person who gives selflessly to others. It’s just her way. She has spent most of her life working with underserved people of all kinds - people with disabilities, children with behavioural issues, people with mental health problems and people at risk in general. To give just a snapshot of Kellie’s incredible dedication to serving others, she is approaching 10 years of volunteering with Lifeline, an Australian organisation which provides access to crisis support, suicide prevention and mental health support services. Somewhere in Australia, there is a new call to Lifeline every minute. Kellie staffs the phones every other Saturday. How many people would devote their Saturdays to such an effort after working and studying hard all week?

Her work has been both physically and mentally demanding. And yet, I’ve never once heard Kellie complain. In fact, she is so clearly meant to do what she does and she is very gifted at it. She is a devoted student and a diligent professional.

Kellie is currently studying for her counseling degree via distance learning. A good computer is essential for her work. Yet, for years she has put up with one friend’s very old lap top, which finally gave way. That laptop was replaced by another friend’s very old computer that doesn’t provide the functionality that Kellie needs. She needs a computer with good audio so she can listen to critical lessons but the audio on this computer is broken. Again, Kellie doesn’t complain. She just tells me in passing about the challenges the lack of a good computer pose to her. If there’s one person I know that deserves a good computer, it’s Kellie!

Kellie also very much needs a fun, restful holiday, which she hasn’t had for a few years. She is planning a two week break in Tasmania. But she still doesn’t know how she will fund that trip and has been considering selling off some of the small retirement savings she has.

So, for the person who gives so much to enrich the lives of others, how about we give to enrich her life? Kellie never asks for anything in return for the positive contribution she’s made to so many lives. And that is exactly why she deserves a couple of heartfelt gifts to start off her 40th year right. Happy Birthday Kellie! You’re the best friend anyone could ask for. I hope we can make a couple of small dreams come true for you.

Please share this appeal with your friends and family. However, we ask that you stick to email and not social media, as we’d very much like to keep this a surprise for Kellie. Thank you for thinking of her and helping us out.
