Adopt a Cat (AAC) is a cat-only no-kill shelter/sanctuary founded by Dr. Beverly Harper, PhD, in September 1994 in Houston, TX. It started with Dr. Harper finding homes for 16 cats. Since then AAC has accepted more than 8000 cats into their program and found homes for over 6000 cats.

AAC provides adoption services at the sanctuary and works with various area Petcos and PetSmarts, which provide space for off-site adoptions by animal welfare groups as part of their corporate policy. An integral part of AAC’s commitment entails community education. This has shown to be vital to the challenging cat over-population problem.

Many people also contact AAC wanting assistance with spay neuter and other preventative health care for their pets or cats they have rescued. Additionally, many cats come with injuries and illnesses which are treated and healed. Due to certain health related conditions many cats are not suitable for adoption and remain with the shelter for the rest of their lives.

Since the recession it has become challenging to keep the sanctuary operating and it is very close to closing. Costs have increased and so has the cat population. Cats are coming to the shelter quicker than good homes can be found.

We need organizations like Adopt a Cat to provide shelter and services for homeless cats until safe and caring, permanent homes are found. Please send whatever you can afford to keep the AAC sanctuary open. It will be greatly appreciated!
