Fundiswa's Story
Fundiswa is one of my Sponsor children. She is 9 years old and lives with her mother and 2 brothers in the Kwa-Zulu Natal area of South Africa; one of the areas that has been hardest hit by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Fundiswa’s mother is single, all 3 of her children have been conceived through rape; another, yet still common, occurrence in this area of South Africa. Mother and children are all HIV positive.
In January of 2012 little Fundiswa was also sexually assaulted; left in a field, broken and bleeding; she almost lost her life. Because of this horrific attack, the family has moved to a different area and is presently staying at different friends homes, as they permit.
Fundiswa’s mother has procured a job in the cane fields and has been trying hard to save enough money to pay the Induna (chief) for a plot of land on which to build their own home. I have learned the mother was recently hospitalized (now released) because of complications in her HIV/AIDS condition.
I had the privilege of visiting the family in May of this year at which time I learned the plight of Fundiswa and family. I returned home wondering if it would be possible to pay for and then help to, build the home they need so desperately. I discissed this with my 14 year old grand daughter and we decided to put forth a query to World Vision. This is not something they have ever taken on before (it's not really one of their mandates, but they are doing us this special favour)and so, after much conferring with World Vision Canada, World Vision South Africa, the local Zulu community, and the family, we have been approved to pay for the home, but unfortunately, due to child protection laws, etc. we will not be allowed to participate in the build. We will however be given the opportunity to help in the local World Vision Office; then present the family with the keys to their new home!
The build is starting now and we hope to be there mid-July to pass on the keys. Will you help us make this dream come true for this family and donate to the building project?
