The irreparable loss of thousands of
Jewish artists (musicians, painters, writers, poets) during the
Holocaust is a tragedy whose extensive and long-lasting consequences
are still impossible to fully comprehend.
These artists suffered a double penalty: they were murdered in
atrocious conditions, and their art was also forgotten for many decades.
This is why the Missing Voices initiative was founded in 2020 by the talented French pianist Dimitri Malignan, dedicated to honoring the works and lives of Jewish composers of Classical Music who were tragically murdered during the Holocaust, and to rectify a shameful oversight in Music History.
One of these missing voices is the Dutch-Jewish composer Daniël
Belinfante—a significant professor and composer in early
20th-century Amsterdam—who was murdered by the Nazis on January
27th, 1945, in Auschwitz, on the same day the camp was liberated.
After being forgotten for many decades, Belinfante's legacy is being
revived through the very first full album dedicated to his
piano compositions, interpreted by Dimitri Malignan.
By recording this music, Missing Voices pursues a transformative
form of cultural restitution, aiming to make these talented
composers' works accessible for remembrance and appreciation.
Your support is crucial in
achieving this goal—shedding light on their stories during
an era marked by a regressive decline in Holocaust knowledge and a
resurgence of global antisemitism while contributing to the
recording of Belinfante's music or sharing the mission of Missing
Voices constitutes a powerful and tangible way to amplify these
once-silenced voices. Your support and contributions will go
directly into the recording expenses (at a top recording studio in
the heart of Brussels, with the best sound engineers and a leading
piano technician on a state-of-the-art Steinway Model D), the
logistics (accomodation and travels for Dimitri) and post-production
(mixing, editing, manufacturing of physical CDs and digital
streaming, marketing and promotion).
In addition to organizing numerous concerts across the globe
(including France, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, and the
U.S.A...), Missing Voices launched a new CD
collection in 2024 to record the music of composers who faced
persecution during WWII.
In collaboration with the French label Editions
Hortus and the esteemed organization Forum Voix
Etouffées, this ambitious Missing Voices CD series has already
released three albums, receiving widespread critical acclaim and
extensive reviews, with several additional albums currently in
production.
The Daniël Belinfante album will be the Volume 4 of the
collection, to be released this Fall.
Missing Voices was born out of a deep-seated need to resurrect
these composers who were tragically lost in the Holocaust, denying
the Nazis a posthumous victory over those they eradicated and whose
artworks were obliterated, alongside an entire strand
of European and Jewish cultures.
Restoring their music is the best
way to pay justice to these composers.
