On Sunday February 8th, Louise ZoBell passed away in the Dominican Republic after a fall and emergency hip surgery. Her life’s mission was making a difference to one at a time - this includes many of you who are reading this post and thousands of individuals in the Dominican Republic.
If you knew Louise, she would use every opportunity to fundraise for any project she was working on. She was very creative. She did birthday fundraisers, anniversary fundraisers, twelve days of Christmas, auctions, and more. This is the worst fundraiser ever, but it must be done. If we didn’t use her death as on opportunity to fundraise for the Dominican Starfish projects, our mom would haunt us. Many people have asked if we need support for a funeral or costs of transporting her body. We’ll be fine. Our wish is for every cent to go towards the foundation that she built from the ground up.
We, her children and the board, are stepping into big shoes. We will not let her legacy fail. It will take many people to fill the role of one remarkable woman. As much as there are many dollars that have flowed through the foundation over the years, they have all been allocated to past and current projects. The minute money was earned it was given freely to those in need which leaves the foundation with limited financial resources. But fundraising is hard. My mom was amazing at this. She dreamt up the idea of the home building club. It was her dream to have enough money coming in from monthly donors that the grind each day for donations would be minimal. You see, she could never stop building houses. If she stopped, the workers couldn’t feed their families. So we can’t stop either. We will continue her foundation in her memory using her example and guiding light every step of the way. May this be a defining moment.
