Beatrice Gitu hasn't added a story.
Am Beatrice, a Kenyan adventure and farmer passionate about the communities in the Arid and Semi-Arid (ASALs) areas that are predisposed to drought and famine. I felt a strong call to relocate and serve one community in a town in the Mount Kenya region called Mitunguu, Meru with the intention of setting up a sustainable model farm.
I must say before I travelled to this part of the country, I had never witnessed a drought. Temperatures get so high, as high as 43°. Every living plant dies and dries off and it is hard to imagine whether anything can ever grow back. Stored water from the last rainy season quickly runs out. The only water available is expensive and highly contaminated river water 7km away from the town. It is fetched and delivered by motorbikes at $20 cents per 20 litre jerry can. Those who cannot afford walk all the way to fetch water. Most times, the locals don't boil or treat the water. Clear transparent water in a glass appears golden since the drinking water in this town is more often murky and turbid.
Awakened by the rude shock, I put the perfect farming plans on hold, just to get to the root of matter. This area is plagued by drought, when it does rain, it's not sufficient to grow traditional crops like maize and beans. The alternative is rearing livestock. The borehole will enable the local community draw water for their livestock as well as provide clean drinking water to prevent infection and death particularly from Chorela.
The farm will train farmers improved farming techniques and practises to take full advantage of the short rain to plan and plant appropriately. In the near future after the borehole is set up, I will initiate a best practise animal farm and drought resistant crops model farm. It is my goal therefore to be part of the solution and be an oasis in the town.
I would want to demonstrate to farmers how they can profitably earn a living and support themselves and their families. Living in this community, has truly humbled me. It has made me aware of the simple necessities we take for granted. It has also challenged me to rise up and be a voice for the voiceless and forgotten people in this rural area. Every life matters, and there is no need to wait until someone dies from hunger or a treatable and preventable illness.
Partnering with a local farmer, we have identified a 20 acre
farm that currently has no access to water. We have already
engaged drilling consultants and have obtained the necessary
permits start drilling immediately we achieve the target. The
April-July rainy season coincides with the fundraising period
hence my title ONE SEASON, ONE BOREHOLE.
This is to ensure that, the borehole will drilled in time for the dry season.
As a personal commitment, When we attain half of the funding goal, I will consequently summit Mount Kenya at point Lenana, which is 4,985 metres ( 16,355 ft) high and provide an update complete with photos and videos. I am excited about the fundraiser, most particularly the opportunity to invite you along this journey.
LETS RAISE MONEY THIS SEASON!!!
