Mel Thistle hasn't added a story.
My name is Melanie Thistle and this year I decided to participate in Aprons for Gloves 2016. I have never boxed before in my life and the thought of getting punched is scary and exciting at the same time. That being said when I heard the tryouts were coming I decided to challenge myself and try something that I've never done before. Whats life without some thrill right? Participating in Aprons for Gloves is important to me for a few different reasons. Firstly, the money raised goes towards Eastside Boxing. Essentially it helps keeps the lights on so that they can provide a safe and positive outlet to at risk youth and women in the downtown eastside. As many of you know, there is a great deal of development and gentrification that is taking place in Vancouver's eastside and sometimes the sense of community can be forgotten. This is another another reason why I decided to participate. Having a sense of community and belonging is important to me and the feeling I get from Eastside Boxing and AFG is that of a community. That being said, I also want to belong to and committ to a group that motivates and supports me to be the best I can be.I can imagine how important Eastside Boxing is to at risk youth and women who may feel the same about community and belonging. That is why I am committed to raising $2000 and I hope that you will help me support the cause!
Founded in 2012, Aprons for Gloves Boxing Association is a non-profit organization focused on providing community outreach through the sport of boxing. Based in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, the organization was developed by a small group of professionals and entrepreneurs who seized an opportunity to re-establish a historic boxing program for at-risk women and youth. The program offers free mentorship and training to individuals who may otherwise not have the resources or support to participate in such activities. The sport of boxing teaches discipline, respect, hard work and self-control. Training results in positive self-esteem, good health and camaraderie for its practitioners.
Restaurant Rumble 2016
Every year bartenders, chefs, dishwaters, servers, baristas and all sorts of individuals from the Gastown community get together to train at the Eastside Boxing Club to fight in Restaurant Rumble.
In order to attend training, each fighter is required to raise $2000 for charity before they can compete at the Rumble.
