The Tandem Project hasn't added a story.
Who we Are...
People living with vision loss are at a greater risk of social isolation and reduced community participation, and only 3% of Canadians with a disability are involved in organized sports. With people who have vision loss experiencing depression three times more often than someone living with full sight, The Tandem Project’s primary mission is to change people’s lives two steps at a time.
TTP works with our members to provide three things that they lose after vision loss: connections, by building community between the blind and sighted; confidence, by supporting their participation in life changing accomplishments; and inclusion, by working to break down barriers.
The Tandem Project creates and promotes a culture of respect and empowerment. We are dedicated to providing meaningful solutions to counter social exclusion for people living with vision loss and creating an inclusive community with sighted allies. At all times, TTP holds ourselves accountable to our people, our donors, and our partners.
Terry's Story....
"Getting ready for work one morning, I looked in the mirror and couldn’t see myself! I didn’t realize at that time, but this was the beginning of my new life and the end of my sighted one and the lifestyle I had been living for the past 46 years.
It was the day that I would begin a struggle like I had never thought possible. The next four years were about losing who I was, what I was about and where I had been. I didn’t know why this was happening to me.
Then one day, I received an e-mail from Jan Ditchfield who was organizing a triathlon camp for blind persons in Muskoka, ON. And thought, why not?
I really don’t think that Jan knew what she was about to do for this person, who had spent the last four years in limbo having lost everything that had made me a person, a contributor to society and given me a feeling of usefulness.
Since that day, I have gone onto to do many triathlons, running races and cycling events across Canada and the USA; but probably more importantly I became a contributor to society again. I have volunteered, organized and participated in many different organizations relating to disabilities, but focusing on blind and visually impaired persons.
I have now regained my dignity, self-confidence, my feeling of usefulness and again have a purpose in life."
Tim's Story...
"After more than two decades of marathons, and eventually triathlons, I began to feel like I should be doing something to give back to the community of runners that had such a profound impact on my life. I didn't know exactly what that meant, but I had been running for a quarter of a century, injury-free, and wanted to give other athletes the chance to experience what I had.
One day, while I was browsing Facebook, I noticed a post in my News Feed searching for a running guide for a blind distance runner. He needed someone to guide him through an upcoming marathon, and he lived less than two hours away in Ontario. It was like it had been written just for me. Almost stunned, I thought, "This is what I've been waiting for."
It's amazing to think that because of one Facebook post, I'm connected with an organization dedicated to empowering visually impaired athletes and have met so many truly amazing people through my involvement there. Watching a blind runner cross a finish line, you can see that sense of accomplishment washing over them. That's what this experience is all about, giving other athletes the opportunity to accomplish something extraordinary and help them feel included in society through the act of participating on an equal footing. Like in some other aspects of life, they aren't being isolated or given special treatment. They're out there on the pavement, just like everyone else."
When you donate to The Tandem Project, you're not changing one life. You're changing two.
There are over 800,000 people in Canada who are blind or living with vision loss facing risk of social isolation and reduced community participation. 90% of the volunteers in Canada are looking for a meaningful way to contribute to their community. We bridge this gap by building connections between the blind and sighted community to foster extraordinary partnerships. By helping to match sighted volunteers, people with vision loss are supported in life changing accomplishments; which builds confidence and provides a sense of purpose to both individuals.

"For most of my life I thought I could overcome my daily struggles alone until I was found by The Tandem Project, and I realized I was just going through the motions and not really living."
