Joan Neptune hasn't added a story.
My husband and myself have spent the past 14 years rescuing feral and abandoned cats here in Northern California. We have spent all of our time, and most of our money changing our home and rural property into a safe and secure sanctuary for hungry, injured, sick and unwanted cats that were found in our community barely surviving in parks, around fast food restaurants, commercial buildings, vacated houses, and trailer parks and similar locations.
We work with local animal control agencies, pet adoption groups and other caring individuals to keep these unwanted pets from being mistreated, injured, or euthanized. Many were family pets before being abandoned. They are all frightened, very hungry, and some have been terrorized. It is so rewarding to see how they quickly respond to food, a kind touch and a gentle voice.
Our efforts began in locating, feeding, trapping, spay and neutering, releasing and maintaining homeless cat colonies. Currently there are 17 different locations where nightly feeding and monitoring occurs. Stabilizing colony size with spay and neuters, feeding and monitoring each has created a commitment in time, energy and significant expense. Over time it became apparent that many of the cats being cared for needed a safer place to live and we decided to relocate them to our property where they are protected and loved.
Little did we realize when we started this journey that our home would grow into a 24/7 sanctuary. Today we include several volunteers and six part-time employees and we buy carloads of food and litter weekly to maintain the operation this has become. We have working shifts in morning cleanup, evening feeding and our nightly feral colony route. We are both 73 years old and wearing out!!!
We hired employees, college students and family members in need of supplemental income, to reward their significant committment to this work. Our volunteers have been willing and eager to help without the financial need. Having the employees and supporting 200+ cats has used up much of our life savings and we are now in desperate need of donations to help us continue caring for the animals who have come to depend on our care.
Please consider helping us with a donation. Become part of the solution of the abandoned and feral cat problem. It is a huge problem which is ignored by most people and of little interest to the local public agencies. We will be most grateful and life will continue full of purring contented cats and you will be sharing in a part of this endeavor with us as a result! Thank you, Joan Neptune, Founder Stillwater Cat Haven
