We are writing you today to request support for our Patriot Challenge. The Patriot Challenge is an experiential program created that is made up of several tasks that students must complete in order to gain a greater appreciation and understanding of their country and patriotism.  First, students must participate in weekly meetings with Mr. Curtis, the Middle School Social Studies teacher, over several months to discuss important issues regarding United States history, key Core Democratic Values, and their role as responsible citizens within our country. Second, students must engage in two community service projects that benefit their community. Examples are volunteering at charity depots for children in Africa, serving at soup kitchens, assisting with community restoration projects, i.e. murals, etc., or other opportunities that foster a deep connection to their role within their community. Along with the community service projects students are required to serve at least one military veteran by completing an in depth interview of that veteran’s experiences and motivations to serve their country, assist that veteran for at least four hours over two months by doing anything that benefits that veteran, and give a presentation to the Patriot Challenge group about how this experience has allowed them to better appreciate the role of veterans in their life. We truly feel that interviewing and serving veterans is a unique chance to learn about real life experiences that cannot be taught through a textbook. Lastly, and this is where we need your help, the students will embark on a trip to New York City, NY.

During our spring break, we would like to send our students to New York City to be able to experience some of the amazing topics they are learning about in person, such as the September 11th, memorial and museum, Ellis Island, The Statue of Liberty, Museum of Natural History, and various other locations that hold deep educational and cultural value that I believe will develop lifelong lovers of American History and values. The costs involved in this trip are $1,250 per participant. We are trying to cover the costs for a group of students and adults. Any amount you can donate will help make a young mind grow and have their “textbook” come to life.
