David Roy hasn't added a story.
Hello and welcome!
My name is David Roy and I am a 21 year old male that since I
can remember has had a passion for anything and everything
Japanese. A few months ago I filled out an application for the
Global Lattitude volunteering program, which is an international youth
development charity. The program has been around for over 40 years
(formerly called the Gap activity project) sending youth from UK,
Canada, Australia and New Zealand to both developed and developing
countries with the aim to give young people the opportunity to
experience the world beyond their own community while simultaneously
enriching and giving back to the communities they are placed in.
Upon signing up for the program I waited patiently for a
response and finally after a few weeks of twiddling my thumbs waiting
to hear back from them I received the call. Then I had to take two
different skype interviews, the first with the representative in
Canada and the second with the country manager in Japan. After I
passed both of those interviews I began to fill out copious amounts of
paperwork. Then waited a couple more weeks to hear about the details
of my placement. The day I received the e-mail regarding all the
details of my placement was very exciting for me because the dream
that I had my whole life about going to Japan seemed just that much
closer.
My placement will be at a community centre in 墨田区(Sumida-ku)
prefecture of 東京 (Tokyo). My main tasks at the community centre will
be youth development, teaching English to the other staff and being
that funny looking white guy from Canada that everyone laughs at. My
placement there will be for 6 months, I will be arriving in Tokyo the
beginning of September with my placement lasting until march. I will
be sharing an apartment with one other volunteer from Canada for the
duration of my placement there.
Anyways I hope all of this information has not bored you to
death yet, I just thought it would be nice to let you all know why I
am going to Japan and asking for support. The program has some fee's
which for the most part I have taken care of but every little bit
helps as flights to and from Japan and not cheap by any means. So here
I am asking for assistance in anyway possible, no donation is too
small I truly appreciate anything that you are willing to spare. In
return for a donation towards my trip I can offer you delivery of some
Japanese product that you have been iching to get, I can take pictures
of sights that you would like to see, I can teach you how to write
your name in Japanese, I can dance around and make a fool of
myself.... haha but really the sky is the limit if you need a helping
hand with anything please let me know!
I thank you all very much for even taking the time to read about
what's going on for me in the next year. I hope that you can help me
out on my journey and if not I completly understand. You are all
amazing anyways! :-)
Cheers,
David
