My middle son, Ben, and I will travel to Tijuana, Mexico this July to build a house for a truly wonderful family.  Please help us raise funds for supplies.

Three years ago my eldest son, Jack, and I went to Tijuana, Mexico with our church and AMOR Ministries to build houses for families that earn as little as $1 a day.  Jack knew before we left that we'd see poor people and there wouldn't be any Xbox.  But this was his first time seeing poverty.  Abject poverty.  Cardboard box house, dirt floor, one-pair-of-shoes poverty.  I was worried about how he'd react - even more worried about how I'd react to his reaction!  It was one of those moments as a parent when you realize that you really didn't have a plan for everything.  So what did he do?  Picked up a hammer and helped build a house.  Learned a little Spanish.  Ate a REAL taco (blew his mind).  And maybe gained - just a little - perspective about who he is and what he can do.  It was, in a word, awesome. Scary. Hot. Hard. Tiring. Joyful.

It might be difficult for us Facebookers to imagine.  We love our kids.  We work hard to provide for them, protect them, plan for their future.  And yet...think about tucking our kids into a bed on a dirt floor in a cardboard-walled shack.  This summer, we can take that last part out of the equation.

In Mexico, some of the poorest families send their children away to orphanages because they cannot provide for them. Rather than being full of children without parents, orphanages cared for kids whose parents loved them so much, that they were sent away to provide for their general needs.  So, for the last thirty three years, Amor Ministries’ main purpose was and continues to be to provide adequate housing in order to keep families together.  And it's working.  To date, over 17,000 homes have been built.

So this summer, my middle son, Ben, and I will travel to Tijuana.  Learn a little more Spanish. Eat some real tacos.  And help keep a family together and safe by building them a house.

If you can, please donate.  It will help our family in getting the funds we need to get there, and REALLY help the family in Mexico by purchasing the supplies for the house.
