Highbury Dressage hasn't added a story.
Over the past four years I have developed a partnership with one of the greatest horses I have had the pleasure of riding and having in my life, Birkegardens Lukas.
During our initial period together we had some very high points and some very low ones, to the point where I had the fear of losing Lukas in 2011 when he colicked and was hospitalized for over a month. I remember a time when all I wanted was that Lukas would be able to come home to the barn and be able to eat a regular meal. Lukas must have had some sort of angel, because he came home. Slowly and surely, Lukas and I began to train and work in order to regain his health, fitness, and strength. He also regained his love of food! Over two years later, Lukas and I have exceeded all training goals and now we are working towards the World Equestrian Games this summer in Normandy, France. Lukas has such an amazing work ethic and he is physically and mentally ready to ramp up for the work and travel demands that come along with competing at the international level.
We have embarked on a journey from our home in Langley, Canada to southern California to train and compete in the international arena. We aim to achieve our qualifying score to officially declare our intent to participate on the Canadian Team for the World Equestrian Games. Our first show will be February 21st in Burbank, CA at the Mid-Winter Dressage CDI, followed by two CDI outings in March and one CDI outing in April. In between shows, we are stabled in the San Diego area. This allows us to have lessons with Olympian Sue Blinks to take advantage of her Olympic experience and keen judge's eye.
This is where I need your support. International shows, training and travel are costly. Our qualifying period begins in a few weeks, and without your support, Lukas and I will not be able to pursue this dream. Your support will aid us in representing you and Canada at the highest calibre of international dressage. It would be such a shame not to have a chance to compete to our potential when we are both ready.
This fundraising campaign is designed to help Lukas and I with our many necessary expenses that come with international competition and travel. Your donations will help us fund show entry fees, hotels and stabling, farrier costs, training, travel, board costs far away from home, and all of the incidentals that come along with owning and competing a horse that is poised to take the spotlight on the world’s stage. Your contributions will help Lukas have a well deserved carrot after a workout, a new set of shoes to help him dance down centerline, and the opportunity to earn a spot on the Canadian national team.
A wise man once told me "Grand Prix horses don't grow on trees" and I firmly believe that. Especially ones like Lukas. I truly believe that Lukas will do great things for Canada and all of you that help us reach our goals. Each day that Lukas and I train, he tells me that he didn't grow on a tree, and he is most certainly ready to strut his stuff for Canada, and for you!
