We are United Methodists, lay and clergy, who believe the Spirit of God is speaking through the stories of the United Methodist people. Together these stories affirm that Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer persons should be joyfully embraced as members of the body of Christ and as gifted children of God entitled equally to all of the ministries, ceremonies, and sacraments of the United Methodist Church.[1] In spite of the silence our institutional stances cultivate, the Spirit continues to speak through the experiences of the people of our congregations. The "Spirit Speak" video project provides an opportunity to hear, share, and tell the sacred stories of everyday United Methodists.

The initial outcome of the "Spirit Speak" project will be an inspirational video that gives testimony to the move of the Spirit amongst United Methodists. The video will compile stories from a diverse cross section of lay and clergy members, inviting viewers to reflect upon and share their own stories. The core story video will be between 10 and 15 minutes in length, will be available to download (at no cost), and will come with a discussion guide to assist groups within local United Methodist congregations. From the core story video, two additional shorter videos as well as several promotional clips will be made available for download at no cost for use in worship services, websites, and social media.

Our ultimate vision for Spirit Speak is to create an online platform to collect and share stories on an ongoing basis so that all people in all places can witness the Spirit Speaking through the lives of United Methodists as we grow more open, more loving, and more inclusive.

Since The Book of Discipline prevents us from using apportionment funds for anything that "promotes homosexuality," this project truly is a grassroots movement! Our goal is to raise $3,000 in 30 days to cover the costs of video and audio equipment, promotional and educational material, as well as production. We know we are not alone in our belief that the Spirit is moving us toward a truly inclusive vision of the body of Christ, and we invite you to join us in a project that shares the everyday stories of how this vision is being embodied.

For more information on how you or your church can be involved with the Spirit Speak project, please email us at info@spiritspeak.org or call us at (303) 902 7924.
