During the past 15 years Pictou County Early Intervention has been providing free, confidential home visit services to young children and their families in Pictou County. Early Intervention is a home based program serving children birth to school age who have been diagnosed with or are at risk of developmental delay. The delay may be due to conditions such as autism, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, birth defects etc. Services include home visiting, education and support, referrals, toy and book lending and transition to preschool and school. The early years present crucial learning opportunities and intervening early helps children reach their potential.

Pictou County Early Intervention is a charitable nonprofit agency funded partially through the Department of Community Services and through local fundraising efforts. Pictou County Early Intervention is a United Way Member Funded Agency. The program is partially funded by the United Way of Pictou County. We gratefully acknowledge the generosity of the United Way in helping us provide early intervention services to families in Pictou County.

As with many nonprofit agencies, it is a challenge to provide services when funding is a concern. They currently service an average of 40 children/families and presently have a waiting list of 28 families. In order to continue as is this Fundrazr will hope to raise $42,000, otherwise 12 families may face a change in service and newly referred families will wait even longer for service. This will be in direct contrast to the belief that intervening early in a child’s is crucial to optimal development.

This valuable program as it exists is in jeopardy. There is no funding to support 12 families beyond March 31, 2013.Your support could help Pictou County Early Intervention continue the valuable service and support the community has benefitted from for the past 15 years. No child should have to wait for this service.

I have personally been very involved in the program for many years as a part time early interventionist and as a member of the Board of Directors. In these roles I have seen for myself the value of the program to families and the community of Pictou County. As a former special education teacher I saw so much value for our children preparing for school. PCEI provides an invaluable service to families and schools when they support transition to school. We could always wish to provide service to many more families who are waiting. At this time we are hoping your generous support we mean that no families will lose service after March 31, 2013. Thank you. ~ Jean Nicol
