Hello,
My name is Maranda. I am a 20 year old second year college student working toward completing two Bachelor’s Degrees; one in Biomedical Engineering and one in Mechanical Engineering. With these two degrees, I hope to one day make healthcare better by giving doctors better tools with which they can save more lives. The focus of my passion is organ transplants. Every year, hundreds of thousands of people die because doctors couldn’t get a replacement organ in time. Every year, hundreds of thousands of potentially lifesaving organs are deemed unusable due to an infection or an unsigned organ donor card. It’s my goal to join biomedical research to explore alternatives to organ transplants. One day, I hope to save hundreds of thousands of lives, but today, I need to ask for help.

At this point in time, my family and I are going through a rough patch. My mother is going through a divorce to get away from someone who has hurt and used us for far too long. Just weeks ago, I was laid off because the company I worked for was downsizing. A few weeks after that, I underwent surgery to remove a cyst in my fallopian tube and a septum in my uterus, during which I was diagnosed with Endometriosis. Two days ago, the engine of one of our cars collapsed and the whole car must now be junked forcing my mother, sister, and I to reorganize our schedules to decide who uses the car and when. We are living paycheck to paycheck to support ourselves and my 6 year old brother.

The four of us are struggling, but we’re getting by; making the most of what we have. College is a challenge for me. Despite my best efforts, I have found myself unable to get any scholarships because I cannot afford to attend college full-time and most scholarships require applicants to be full-time students. I am also unable to receive grants because of my mother’s salary even though every cent of her bimonthly paycheck goes toward paying bills and buying food. Recently, I received an invitation to attend an Engineering Program in China due to my 3.95 GPA and my membership in the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society. I feel that this honor will help me get Scholarships, get accepted into a University when I finish my 2 years at the Community College next year, and get an internship/job after I graduate. I do have some money saved up for college tuition and necessities, but it’s not enough for me to attend the program. I hope to raise $3,000 which will cover one third of my tuition costs and the price of the plane tickets to and from the program.

I thank all of you for reading this and considering a donation. Even if you can’t give a lot, every little bit helps. $10, $5, $1, $0.50; it all adds up to more help than I ever could have asked for.
