Emily Grace Flowers is one of three 9-month old triplet sisters. Emily was diagnosed while still in the womb with a diaphragmatic hernia, which means everything that was supposed to be in her abdomen was in her chest. When Emily was born, they knew she wouldn't be able to breathe on her own, but they weren't prepared for the hole they discovered in her heart. At that point all 3 girls were in different locations: Kaitlyn in the NICU in Columbia, Nicole in the regular nursery in Columbia, and Emily in the NICU in Charleston. Doctors were able to pull everything out of Emily's chest and close up the hole. However, since then she has had 6 more surgeries on her abdomen, trying to unkink her intestines so she could eat and putting her anatomy in place. However, instead of her left lung growing like it should have in the empty space, her right lung grew into her left chest and it pushed her heart over, down into her back, and turned it backwards. Since Emily is the one of the only known "backwards heart", case studies have been done on her. Her last procedure was videotaped and will possibly be named. Her heart remains backwards today. She just had her 9th surgery at the beginning of May, 2012, and she went from 2 feeding tubes in her abdomen to 1. The doctor said it will be at least 2 years before she is eating completely on her own. Eventually she will need more open-heart surgeries and possible stomach surgeries. Today, Emily resides at Shands in Gainesville, and her parents have relocated to their hometown of DeLand. Nick Flowers, Emilys father, has been active duty for 13 1/2 years. They are only in Florida right now because the army gave nick a compassionate reassignment for 2 years so they could be near family. Nick and Rhonda remain graceful through all of this, and still have Emily's 3 sisters at home (Kaitlyn, 9 months; Nicole, 9 months; and Megan, 5yrs.). Help us offer the Flowers family some financial relief so they may focus on Emily and their beautiful family. Checks should be made to Rhonda Flowers and may be sent to Styleworks Hair Studio c/o Angela Baker 1431 Orange Camp Rd. St 111 DeLand FL 32724
