One Girl Can hasn't added a story.
Giving Back:
Laura graduated from Ganze Girls' Secondary School and is looking to enter university this year, help me sponsor her university education and help her stay in school and pursue an education in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math)!
For the past four years I've contributed to sponsoring a girls' high school education. This year, I'd like to extend the opportunity to contribute to a girl's university education, by requesting that no gifts be given at my bridal shower and instead, request that you help contribute (at any denomination) to Laura's scholarship. I believe the smallest contribution can bring the biggest impact.
University Scholarship Goal: $3,500/covers one year of university education
About Laura:
Name: Laura Kabibi Kaingu
Aged: 19 years
Background: Sixth born in a family of eight girls. Both parents are deceased. Sisters aged 24, 22 and 20 are currently in university, while the two youngest (aged 14 and 17) are still in secondary school.
Born: Maryango, Bamba in Kilifi County
What is your first choice for the academic program you wish to be enrolled in at university? Accounting
What are you most proud of in your overall performance in school to date? The most proud that I have in my overall performance beside attending the required grade, is that I will be able to join an university and impact other girl's lives in academic through my hardwork.
If there is one thing that you would hope to change in the world you've come from, what would it be? The thing that I would like to change in this world is the mentality that a girl if inferior and cannot do better in lift. I will go back to the village and empower girls on having self esteem and positive attitude towards life, whether from a well-off background or a needy background.
How do you think your education will help you to impact that change? That fact that I will have completed my university course, I will be able to organize some mentorship programs in our village and empower most of the girls in school. I will also raise some money after university to help girls back in our village who have the ability, but they are not able to make it in life. I will make sure that I be a role model to the entire village and change people's mentality about a girl.
About Scholarships:
In the rural areas and urban slums where we work, chances of attending high school or university are extremely low, especially if you are a girl. We provide high school and university scholarships for the brightest and most determined girls, so they can break out of poverty and build a career.
100% of your donation goes directly to our projects. All administration, marketing and travel expenses are absorbed by the founder’s company, AG Hair, allowing your contribution to work hard where it does the most good.
It doesn’t end with us. Every single successful girl in our program becomes a mentor herself. This creates a ripple effect throughout society, and ultimately moves us closer to ending poverty and gender inequality in the most marginalized regions. Watch our Empower the Cycle Video to find out more!
About One Girl Can:
One Girl Can’s story began in 2008, when we started forming collaborative school partnerships in Kenya and Uganda. While we started with a focus on building projects, we quickly identified a need for a scholarship and mentoring program. Thus our three pillars were born: We Build, We Educate and We Mentor.
10 years later, we’ve provided over 400 scholarships, developed nine school partnerships, and have reached thousands of girls with our mentoring workshops. But we’re just getting started. Our goal is to provide 1000 scholarships by 2025, and then keep going!
