AthensArea HumaneSociety hasn't added a story.
Blue is a beautiful, black lab who was found on December 30th on the corner of a busy street in Athens, GA.. Blue is in need of bilateral cruciate repairs in her back knees. She was found abandoned, cold, scared, and injured. An amazing Athens resident took Blue in and began to care for her. It was soon evident that Blue's injury was more severe than originally suspected so Blue's foster mom took her to the Vet and learned that Blue had ruptured the ligaments in her right hind knee and would need knee surgery as soon as possible. Knee surgery, as you might imagine, is expensive, at $2-2.5k per knee.
Blue's foster mom explored every avenue to raise money and get Blue treated before coming to AAHS with tears in her eyes and concern on her face. Blue needed help! We looked into Blue's history and it turns out that she was adopted as a puppy and not properly cared for, though we will not get into the details because we are focusing on the positives...like getting her all fixed up, full of love, and into a FURever home! Despite her rough beginnings, at just 18 months old, Blue is an amazingly kind, loving, and gentle pup. We instantly fell in love with Blue!
Blue entered into AAHS care officially on January 20th and we immediately took her to our trusted Veterinarians at South Athens Animal Clinic, where she got x-rays and met with the surgeon. It has been determined that Blue needs not only one knee surgery as was originally suspected, but two knee surgeries. She has ruptured the cruciate ligaments in both back knees. Blue is getting around okay, but is obviously in pain and currently taking medication to help alleviate some of the pain she feels. It seems likely that Blue was hit by a car after traveling a long distance from where her former owners lived in Oconee County to where she was found on North Avenue in Athens. We will never be sure what happened to Blue before she was found and taken in from the cold. We do know that Blue is pain and suffering because her knee injuries are severe. The Vet recommended knee surgery as soon as possible so we have decided to do what is in her best interest and go forward with the surgery in hopes we can raise enough money! Blue remains happy and comforted in the company of people and is now in a foster home with an AAHS staff member. She is best buddies with a toddler and is currently living with 2 other dogs. She also does well with cats. Blue is the quintessential lab, except she cannot run and play like other pups her age.
Blue will be undergoing the bilateral ligament repairs on Friday, February 6th. This is going to be an intense surgery, but we know this brave girl is up to the task. We will be caring for Blue and overseeing her recovery after surgery. Once she is healed, Blue will be looking for a home with someone who will love and care for her in the way she deserves. Blue will likely never be able to run and play like other labs, but she is the most amazing companion. We need an adopter who is willing to allow Blue to live in a way that will keep her from reinjuring her knees. Luckily, Blue is happiest when she is curled up next people! She is a wonderful traveler and rides in the car like a pro. We are inviting people to come to the shelter Mon-Fri to meet Blue for themselves...she is certain to win your heart!
The wonderful person who found Blue on that cold day in December has been able to raise some money for this procedure. However, we now need to raise to the remainder and are looking to you for help. We are very lucky because our trusted Vet is giving us an amazing deal on two knee surgeries and we could not be more grateful!
It is all too often that people adopt an animal and then dump it, mistreat it, or abandon it, putting the responsibility of caring for that animal on someone else. Blue was lucky enough to find a kind hearted person who was willing to rally behind her in an effort to save her! Please help us undo the damage Blue's former owner's did by repairing her knees so she can find the perfect home to spend her days loved and cared for in the way she truly deserves! Help us get Blue new knees and follow her recovery here!!
Please email Leah@AthensHumaneSociety.org for more information or any questions regarding Blue and her journey. We welcome those interested in visiting with Blue, even after her surgery, because she loves people and visitors will help to keep her spirits up!
**If we raise more than the cost of Blue's surgery, the remainder will go into our Healing Paws Medical Fund, which pays for emergency & unexpected medical care for animals in our program. For example, we have had cats in need of dental surgery & dogs in need of heartworm treatment. The Healing Paws Medical Fund helps cover these unexpected costs.**
