Volunteering in a third world country or an area of need can make a large impact on that community. We are two nursing students named Ana-Felicia Romero and Olivia Campbell looking to do our part in leaving a last impression in the Dominican Republic. During the first 6 months of 2003, eight mothers died giving birth in Hospital Vicente de Paul. The nursing director, Sor Juana Adames, asked two American midwives to come visit the hospital to help understand why so many mothers were dying. From here proyecto ADAMES was created. This program brings nurses, midwives, and doctors from the United States to teach and work along side the Dominican staff to share information and seek ways to improve the health care. This program not only provides education and culture to both parties, but the cost of the trip contributes to supplies and improving the condition of the hospital. We were given the opportunity to volunteer for two weeks in the Dominican Republic with ADAMES and it is an honor to say the least. Along side a group composed of several students from UMASS Amherst students, Smith College students, and registered nurses/midwives we will be traveling to Dominican Republic to do our part in improving the community. We are asking for donations to assist with the cost of the trip, shipping donated medical supplies to the DR, and money to donate to the hospital in general that could help create working bathrooms, purchase additional supplies, and improve the condition of the facility. Any and all donations will be greatly appreciated by us, Ana and Olivia, and the Dominican community as a whole, in our journey to assist with and provide adequate medical care in this country. We thank you in advance!
