The Friday Harbor Elementary School (FHES) safety initiative seeks to improve safety on the FHES campus.  Specifically, entryways and interior classroom doors will be made more secure, and a comprehensive school safety manual and program will be adopted.

School security is a critical issue – nationally and here.  The statistics are stark:   In 2013, there were 30 school shootings nationwide – an average of one every 1.7 weeks.

It would be easy to believe that Friday Harbor Elementary is immune to violence and child abduction, but we are not.  If an Amish community can have a school shooting, so can our community.

Friday Harbor Elementary has worked with a security consultant, the SJC Sheriff’s Department, and the Department of Emergency Management to work out a plan to increase the security of our school. We have already gratefully received funding from the San Juan Island Community Foundation and Soroptimists International, and hope to match their donations with Elementary school families' participation.

The plan includes changing all the classroom locks to thumb-deadbolt style (thus enabling teachers to lock classrooms from the inside), installing security cameras at two entrances, and installing an electric chime to announce visitors. Ultimately, our plan is to ensure that each of our schools is adequately protected, securing one school each year.

It’s time to secure our schools – for the safety of our children and our teachers.
