On July 12, 2014 we will be hosting a benefit to help veterans with their Hidden Wounds also known as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD. The goal of this event is to increase awareness of the Hidden Wounds that many veterans accrue while doing their job in combat zones and other aspects of their military service. The charity we are raising money for is called Hidden Wounds, which is based out of Columbia, South Carolina. I know firsthand what it is like to suffer from PTSD as I am a 70% disabled veteran due to PTSD myself. Had I received proper mental medical care and instruction upon my exit from my 10 year service in the Marine Corps I would have had a better understanding and found an easier path to healing. Unfortunately I am not alone and many veterans face the same difficulties that I have faced. On average 22 American Heros commit suicide daily in the United States from lack of proper mental care. My goal is to raise money for Hidden Wounds that is an organization that helps finance mental health care before receiving treatment from the VA. There is a long line of backlogs within the VA system so it can take several years to be seen for initial consults. In my own experience this backlog created a two year lapse of no coverage and resulted in serious financial and family problems including a marital separation and failed suicide attempt in April of 2012. What we do is organize and run a beanbag tournament complete with silent auction with 100% of proceeds going directly to Hidden Wounds. This contribution helps Hidden Wounds fund mental health care for our veterans before they can be administered in the VA thus covering the gap from health care while on active duty to actual coverage by Veterans Affairs which is where 80% of the suicides happen. Last year we ran the same event and raised $4000 from silent auction items and entrance into the tournament.
