Forget Me Not K9 Rescue, Inc. hasn't added a story.
This is Piper. He is only 8 months old and already needs to have bilateral hip surgery due to severe hip dysplasia. He has already had a pretty "ruff" start to his life in just these 8 months but he's trying to not let that change is upbeat personality. And the Forget Me Not K9 Rescue is trying to help him get back on his paws.
Forget Me Not K9 Rescue was contacted by the Dane County Humane Society (DCHS) to see if the rescue could help this poor fella out. Forget Me Not K9 Rescue, Inc is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization specializing in helping those dogs that are often overlooked, left behind, or forgotten. Just because they are older, disabled, or have medically complex needs doesn't mean they should be "tossed" aside for a "newer", more "sleek" version. Piper had been dropped off by an owner who reported that he had only had the dog for about 1 week and just couldn't provide the training needed to "make the dog happy". Prior to that the owner said he had gotten the dog from a friend, but no other details were provided. He is a little reserved around men as well.
The staff at DCHS noticed that Piper wasn't walking well, he had a hard time standing, preferred to lay down, and required a lot of coaxing to get him up and moving. X-rays were done and they found that Piper's left hip was mostly dislocated and his right hip was providing less than 50% coverage of his femur. Bottom line...this poor guy needs to have surgery to correct this before he becomes permanently disabled.
He has been started on pain medications and anti-inflammatories which have helped him to the point where he is able to walk, stand, and even run for a little bit, but he can't stay on the high dose medications forever. Luckily, Piper is young and there is a surgical option called a Triple Pelvic Osteotomy (TPO) which he may be a candidate for because he is less than 12 mo old and he is still growing. The TPO has significant benefits for a puppy with hip dysplasia as many are able to go on to lead happy, full, pain-free lives. However, without the surgery, he will develop significant arthritis and would eventually be unable to walk or stand once again.
Piper is currently working on increasing his muscle tone so that when he does have surgery, he will have a better recovery. This poor guy hasn't really been able to use his hind legs without pain for a long time already and therefore he has lost most of his muscle tone in his hind legs, but he's trying hard to not let that slow him down.
We are trying to do everything we can for this young pup so he can find his forever family once he is feeling better. Overall Forget Me Not Rescue has been providing lots of great exercise, nutrition, vet-recommended supplements, laser treatment and possibly acupuncture if needed. He is also undergoing some underwater treadmill training to continue to strengthen his legs.
If you can help in any way...even a $1 can help this beautiful young puppy get the second chance he so deserves. One of the sweetest and goofiest dogs I've seen, he is going to make some lucky family so very happy someday. Let's help him make that dream come true.
