Our Saint Bernard Reznor, aptly named after Trent Reznor, the hard-rocking industrial frontman of Nine Inch Nails, has pericardial effusion, in simple terms the pericardial sack around his heart is filling with fluid without immediate care it will cause heart failure. He is otherwise a strong and healthy 5 year old Saint Bernard with lots left to live for including his two older Boston Terrier brothers (Tyson and Riley).
After discovering Reznor had this condition at our veterinary office in Barrie, we rushed him to the Emergency Clinic in Toronto to have the fluid drained. While this procedure helped relieve the immediate threat to his life, without surgery the sack could continue to repeatedly fill with fluid putting his life in constant danger.
There are primarily two reasons pericardial effusion occurs, either cancer or idiosyncratic (meaning there is no known reason). Thankfully after a few ultrasounds there are no signs of cancer, so hopefully with a visit to a cardiologist and surgery to remove the sack around his heart he could go on to live out the rest of his life without further complication from this otherwise deadly condition.
We will do anything to help Reznor get this surgery, but despite both of us working full-time we need your help to cover the cost of his surgery and other related vet costs. We have informally been told the surgery will be in the range of $4,000 to $6,000. That's in addition to the four thousand we have already spent ensuring that he got the emergency procedure to have his heart drained.
While I know to some spending this much to save an animal may seem absurd, but to us Reznor is one of our three sons. A genuine, big-hearted, fun-loving giant lap dog that loves chasing frogs in the water at the cottage, spending his days eating snow in the winter, and letting his older but much smaller brothers boss him around, steal his toys, and take his bed but he loves them and us with all his heart and we love him the same way.
Our goal is to raise $10,000 to ensure that we can get Reznor all the help he needs, but even if we are only able to raise $1 towards helping him I will consider this fundraising effort a success because I know then that there is at least one person out there who fully understands the love that we have for our Reznor and our drive to make sure that he gets to live the longest, healthiest life he possibly can.
We adopted Reznor in 2009, after he was taken from a home where he was left in a basement abandoned as the owners moved out of the home. Since he has been with us he's been a healthy loving dog up until this recent issue with his heart.
I will continue to add photos and post updates about Reznor's status as we know more. For anyone who decides to help us out, thank you from the bottom of our hearts; as it truly will mean the world to us and Reznor.
If we exceed our goal, or the vet bills do not amount to the more than $10,000 we will be donating any excess funds back to other animals in need whether it be the local SPCA or other animals on Fundrazr in similar situations as Reznor.
