I'm the co-leader of the South Africa team of Johns Hopkins University's chapter of Engineers Without Borders, and am making my second trip to rural KwaZulu-Natal this January.

The goal is simple - to help feed others.

Over the past decade, our organization has installed Alcock ram-pump systems in 8 rural communities and an agricultural school. Using only the power of a small stream, these sustainable and environmentally responsible water pumps transport water to community gardens for irrigation in the dry season when farming is otherwise impossible.

The areas in South Africa in which we work are in extreme need. KwaZulu-Natal is the country's region most affected by HIV/AIDS, with a 40% antenatal prevalence, and a 25.5% prevelance among people 15-24 years old. The region was also heavily affected by aparthied violence.

The goals of this specific trip include meeting with the communities for maintenance education, meeting with government officals for in country support, and making repairs of the system. This will be our final "monitoring and evaluation" trip, in preparation for our "project closeout" trip, where we officially declare the project sustainable, successful and complete.

As a college student, I would really appreciate your donations to help pay for my airfare to South Africa and show your support for helping these communites to take control of providing themselves a basic human need. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated, and please pass this along.
