Over the past few weeks, Albertans have faced devastation, severe financial set-backs and homelessness due to flooding. This comes at a time when Muslim Albertans are beginning to observe the Holy Month of Ramadan (starting July 10).

The Holy Month of Ramadan is the 9th month in the lunar calendar in which Muslims fast from dawn to dusk to increase in piety and sincerity, and to increase in empathy for those less fortunate. As the Holy Quran states: "Fasting has been prescribed for you, as it has been prescribed for those before you (the Jews and Christians), so that you may (learn) self-restraint." (Quran, 2:183)

There is no better time for all of us to remember flood victims and raise funds for the affected families and communities! My non-Muslim friends and colleagues are invited to join me in my fast for one or more days to help raise money for flood relief efforts and to share in the beautiful giving spirit of the month of Ramadan.

All proceeds from this fundraising will be donated to the Canadian Red Cross- Alberta Floods on behalf of my employer, the Ward of 21st Century (W21C) Research & Innovation Centre.

Sponsorship tiers are as follows:

* One day (dawn to dusk): $100
* Two consecutive days (dawn to dusk): $250
* Three consecutive days (dawn to dusk): $400

A donation can be made in any of the following amounts: $10, $20, $50, $100, $250 or $400. Participants pledge to fast for the agreed number of days once their individual fundraising goals are met.

If you wish to volunteer to fast, please email me at rmgerans@ucalgary.ca; I will send you a sponsorship form and we will post your picture, pledge and updates on this website so that you may seek sponsorship pledges from friends and family.

What fasting requires:

Participants pledge to abstain from food from dawn to dusk, and no other substances are to be taken by mouth or inhaled (e.g. no smoking). Water is the only exception, due to the Calgary summer days (for non-Muslims).

FYI: Muslims observe the traditional fast for the Holy Month of Ramadan which is a fast of the mind, soul, and body. It not only excludes all food and water, but is a fast of all the senses (eyes, ears, tongue, and other bodily organs) from all things vain and/or inappropriate. It is meant to be a form of spiritual training and a time for self awareness and self-improvement, and to enable us to relate to those less fortunate.

You may choose to participate in this form of fast if you wish, but you are by no means obliged.

Please join us in helping our fellow Albertans have a fresh start.
