The Community Library Project-
Delivering a World of Information and Opportunity

“Books change lives. They crackle with ideas and help shape people's imaginations, critical thinking skills, and their understanding of the world and the many opportunities within it…Books empower future and current leaders with information because an educated population is better equipped to fight poverty, disease, injustice, and instability”.
- the Asia Foundation-

I. Motivations

The community library project believes in the transformative power of books in providing sparkling ideas, theories, critical thinking skills, and wider perspectives of the world, which generates many opportunities for people. As indicated by the Asia foundation, “Across Asia, millions go without books, or read dated damaged texts”. This situation is especially popular in the rural areas in my village, one of Vietnam’s far-flung corners. Here, as most children are from low-income families, very few attain an opportunity to read at home, and so rarely have enough encouragement to pursue an interest in reading. As a result, the purpose of the project is to encourage a love for reading in the village and to educate unprivileged children and ensure that they have the opportunities to learn and grow through exploring new ideas and stories in books. Then, their dreams for a better life through education can come true.

Besides the educational goal, the project also focuses on providing a source of healthy entertainment for the villagers. During the last few decades, the village has experienced rapid industrialization with the constant building of factories and modern markets. Although its creation of prosperity, industrialization gives rise to material culture, root of a conflict-ridden community. This material culture gradually ruins the close-knit tight among the villagers, so deprives the people of healthy personal growth. Everyday, the villagers get to conflicts over money and the youth are often subject to social crimes due to the lack of healthy entertainment. A provision of a sports or music club would give the villagers something to look forward to , to work for together as a team, and to form a tight bond and an atmosphere of cooperation amongst them

II. The content of the project:

After identifying the on-going realities above in my village, I shall propose a community library project with the following targets:
1. Providing books, newspapers and magazines to all ages and levels of learning.
2. Organizing weekly discussions in order to introduce and foster critical thinking skills that can be attained through analysis of current local events and social issues.
3. Bringing in guest speakers to encourage dialogues addressing current local issues and discussing future solutions.
4. Organizing free English classes. English voluntary teachers will come from my connection with English teaching volunteer clubs.
5. Organizing sports and art clubs.

III. Expected outcomes and maintaining methods

The community library project will provide unprivileged young villagers with innovative ideas, critical thinking skills, and solution to conflict by means of education, sports and music. This project should set the root for more community libraries to be built in the Vietnamese countryside and bring about sustainable development for the nation, especially in its rapid rate of development. In the second half of August, the current executive members are going to conduct a recruitment and training program to look for the next capable leadership team.

“ When children read more, so many good things start happening to them. Their reading and writing skills improve. Their capacity for thought and imagination is boosted. They become better students.”

Teacher at Koh Yao Wiitaya school, Yao Noi Island, Phang Nga province, Thailand

“We cannot stay in the kitchen. The mobile library comes to us and it gives us a great sense of freedom.”
