Catherine Low-Dykhouse hasn't added a story.
This is an elite group. If you've been invited to join this group,
you've remained close to a strong man in a hard fix. Anyone who knows
Ben knows how hard he fights to keep out of the hospital. In a better
world, that fight would be between him and his body, but in this
fallen world, it's also between him and money.
With the help of his faithful community, and his own dogged
ability to take care of business, he's fought that fight well. Over
and above the brutal business of willpowering his body through the
first gastroparesis related hospital stays, he got to his feet
afterwards and made sure he took care of the debts that left him with.
He did not, of course, do this alone. Only those who helped him know
the full extent of the effort that took. But Ben did take steps to get
himself back to the point where he could stand alone as quickly as
possible. After a long, involved benefits chess game, it looked like
he was there. But a disturbing bit of news has come down the
pipeline.
I was sitting and talking with him this afternoon when
news came that his Medicaid carries a deductible of slightly over
$1,900--which he's currently being charged.
"Yeah, but that's only on months when you go to the
hospital." But what he had to say in reply brought the truth home:
"Yeah… that's not too much pressure…" he muttered.
That doesn't seem fair to me. We can't really help Ben with the
core of this suffering, but, surely, between all of us, we can take
this new economic pressure off. If eighty of us link up, it only takes
$20 a piece. After seeing what it takes to put Ben in the hospital,
and what those trips cost him, I can't even personally imagine not
being willing to gamble twenty bucks once a month to release him from
some small measure of the pain.
I'll be posting a link to a paypal account on this group, and by
joining it one takes a simple pledge: to keep a lookout for updates on
Ben's health situation, either via personal contact with him or the
already familiar information source group,
https://www.facebook.com/groups/199166750209362/?ref=ts&fref=ts.
If you see that he's headed into the hospital, the deductible bill is
inevitably to follow. He won't hit you up about it, but he shouldn't
have to. He wouldn't; he's too strong and proud. Just go to the paypal
account and drop twenty bucks in. If we can get 80 in this group, and
we all do our part, then that problem's gone. And Ben can focus on his
body instead of dollar signs like he needs to.
