My daughter was born with a very rare birth defect called septo-optic dysplasia, also known as optic nerve hypoplasia. This condition affects 1 in 10,000 live births. This is a spectrum syndrome that leads to visual impairments (total blindness, to light perception, to legally blind), mental retardation, seizure disorders, hormone deficiencies, some of which are life threatening and can lead to death if not properly managed, brain structure and function disorders, and hypothalmic dysregulation. My daughter is now 10, legally blind, has many of the hormone issues and we are in the ER multiple times a year to prevent life threatening issues from occuring, is on the autism spectrum, and has moderate mental retardation. Every year she participates in our local Special Olympics and every year I raise money to support our local Special Olympics so my daughter and all athletes like her can participate in these events. The fundraiser I am participating this year is called Over the Edge, where participants who raise over $1000 in donations will repel 27 stories down the Seneca Niagara Casino in Niagara Falls, NY.
